Anthropic Prediction of the Dark Matter Abundance

چکیده

I use Bousso’s causal diamond measure to make a statistical prediction for the dark matter abundance, assuming an axion with a large decay constant fa ≫ 10 GeV. Using a crude approximation for observer formation, the prediction agrees well with observation: 25% of observers see less dark matter than we do while 75% of observers see more dark matter. Larger values of the dark matter ratio are disfavored by an elementary effect: increasing the amount of dark matter decreases the number of baryons inside one horizon volume. Thus the prediction does not depend on detailed assumptions about the requirements for life. The key assumption is that the number of observers per baryon is a mild function of the dark matter ratio for values near the observed value.

Anthropic Explanation of the Dark Matter Abundance

I use Bousso’s causal diamond measure to make a statistical prediction for the dark matter abundance, assuming an axion with a large decay constant fa ≫ 10 GeV. Using a crude approximation for observer formation, the prediction agrees well with observation: 30% of observers form in regions with less dark matter than we observe, while 70% of observers form in regions with more dark matter. Large...

Prediction and typicality in multiverse cosmology

In the absence of a fundamental theory that precisely predicts values for observable parameters, anthropic reasoning attempts to constrain probability distributions over those parameters in order to facilitate the extraction of testable predictions. The utility of this approach has been vigorously debated of late, particularly in light of theories that claim we live in a multiverse, where param...

v 2 2 1 D ec 2 00 4 Multiple universes , cosmic coincidences , and other dark matters

Even when completely and consistently formulated, a fundamental theory of physics and cosmological boundary conditions may not give unambiguous and unique predictions for the universe we observe; indeed inflation, string/M theory, and quantum cosmology all arguably suggest that we can observe only one member of an ensemble with diverse properties. How, then, can such theories be tested? It has ...

Dark Matter and The Anthropic Principle

We evaluate the problem of galaxy formation in the landscape approach to phenomenology of the axion sector. With other parameters of standard ΛCDM cosmology held fixed, the density of cold dark matter is bounded below relative to the density of baryonic matter by the requirement that structure should form before the era of cosmological constant domination of the universe. Galaxies comparable to...

Inflatable Dark Matter.

We describe a general scenario, dubbed "inflatable dark matter," in which the density of dark matter particles can be reduced through a short period of late-time inflation in the early Universe. The overproduction of dark matter that is predicted within many, otherwise, well-motivated models of new physics can be elegantly remedied within this context. Thermal relics that would, otherwise, be d...
